Music therapy:

Besides being a jazzpianist Michiel is also a musictherapist. At the moment he is only active as a jazzpianist and pianoteacher, but also gives special performances in elderly houses for peoples with memory problems such as dementia. He has work experiences especially with elderly peoples with memory problems such as dementia and also with peoples with braindamage from all ages.In the various elderly houses where he performs he offers a special programme in wich he performs a mixture of music-compositions of his own but also songs that the peoples recognise from out of the past so that the people can sing along together. The repertoire is variated from quiet and sensitive music to swinging music. Also the balance between being active and singing (and sometimes clapping) along with the music and being passive and only listening is strived to be made up as good as possible, this by tuning in to the experiences of the people and by taking the tension bow of the peoples into account..  and being passive.   By playing songs that the people recognise from the past, the music functions as a structure to hold on to and they refer to valuable areas and memories from the past. The music activates the people and bring them in to the here and now, wich often also has a positive influence for their well-being in the rest of the day.
